This Baijiu, bottled in a sauce-glazed earthenware decanter, depicts the communist leader Chairman Mao Zedong announcing the creation of the People’s Republic of China on October 1, 1949. We assume this decanter was created around the same day in 1979 to honor the 40th anniversary of the R.O.C.

Baker’s has a 7 year age statement and is bottled at 107-proof. It’s one of four products in Jim Beam’s “Small Batch” lineup which further includes Basil Hayden, Knob Creek and Booker’s.

Released Spring 2015 this is a masterful union of well-bred bourbons. The first, a spicy bourbon with a mash bill favoring rye, barrel aged for a subtle woodiness. This, artfully braided with a smooth, but never soft, wheated bourbon of memorable curves. Finally, a more experienced, oaky bourbon with a rye-based mash. None overpowers the other, agreeing to co-exist in harmony.
