The history of Japanese Whisky began approximately 100 years ago. Settsu Shuzo – the most prominent Sake distillery in Japan was keen to build Japans first whisky distillery and in 1918 they sent Masataka Taketsuru (the third son born into a family of sake brewers) to Scotland to learn how to make Scotch Whisky. Masataka returned to Japan November 1921 with plans to start producing 'real' Japanese whisky. The post-war recession in Japan however changed plans and Taketsuru's plans where rejected after which he frustrated left Settsu Shuzo who would eventually become part of Takara Shuzo.
