Back in 2009 Speciality Drinks Ltd introduced ‘The Elements of Islay’, a new range of Single Islay Malt Whiskies that draws its inspiration from traditional medical laboratory labels and packaging – even the bottle used is called ‘pharmacy’. The Elements range is bottled from individual batches of between 5 and 20 carefully selected casks from a single distillery. Each label depicts the distillery’s ‘Element’ symbol alongside a batch number (eg Lp1). An important feature of the Elements range is the absence of vintage or age statements on the label. This enabled SD Ltd to marry casks of different ages together to create a unique taste profile for each batch – they strongly believe that age and vintage statements are less important than creating a top quality malt whisky that truly expresses the character of the distillery that made it. To underscore this, SD asked respected industry figures to endorse each batch.
