Carpano Antica Formula, created in 1786, is the Italian vermouth par excellence, actually the first vermouth ever, made from white wine, Piedmont’s muscatel and the rich wines from southern Italy. Its taste and aroma come from carefully selected brewed mountain herbs. Its vanilla bouquet is matched by notes of spices and dried fruit such as star anise, orange peel and dates.

Perfect to drink cold as an aperitif or after a meal, Carpano Antica Formula can also be used as an ingredient in refined cocktails, adding a special touch in new versions of great classics such as the renowned Negroni or the Americano. Among the latest creations there is the “Prince of Wales” cocktail, one of the most popular drinks in the prestigious Rivoli lounge bar at London’s Ritz hotel.

Carpano Antica Formula is produced in limited amounts and sold in valuable blown-glass bottles.

Description

Antonio Benedetto Carpano (1764, Bioglio (Biella) – 1815, Turin) was an Italian distiller, famous for having invented Vermouth and consequently the apéritif.

In 1786, Antonio Benedetto Carpano invented modern Vermouth in Turin, made from white wine added to an infusion of herbs and spices, in more than 30 varieties. It was sweetened with spirit, which he believed would be a more suitable beverage for ladies than the local red wines. Vermouth proved so popular that soon his shop was open 24 hours a day.

The Carpano brand is now produced and distributed by Fratelli Branca Distillerie of Milan, and includes: Carpano Classico Vermuth, Carpano Bianco, Carpano Antica Formula and the original aperitive “Punt e Mes”.
